frequently asked questions
what is colour grading?
Colour grading is the process of adjusting and enhancing the colours, contrast, and brightness of a video to create a specific mood, style, or cinematic look. It ensures visual consistency and helps convey emotion in storytelling.
what is the difference between colour correction and colour grading?
Colour correction balances and fixes exposure, white balance, and colours for accuracy, while colour grading is the creative process of stylizing the image for a cinematic or artistic look.
can you work with iPhone, DJI and Sony footage?
Yes! We can assist with a range of LUTs (look up tables) for base camera correction to Rec. 709 – suitable for most consumer and Sony Cinema range cameras.
what color space do you color grade in?
Currently Rec. 709 SDR – (Standard Dynamic Range).
what monitors do you use for colour grading?
For Rec. 709 projects we work in wide colour gamut, calibrated Ezio monitors. We use (brightness Peak) 300 nit HDR monitors for Rec. 2100 PQ and HLG projects.
do you specialise in certain projects types?
Music videos, short films (including digital cinema cameras and true film telecine), commercial videos and and social media advertising form the bulk of previous projects we’ve worked on.
can you match the colour grade to a specific film or reference?
Yes! If you have a reference from a film, music video, or other media, we can match or create a custom look inspired by it.
what’s the best format for delivering graded footage?
For high-quality masters, we recommend ProRes 4444 XQ, while compressed formats like H.265 (HDR10) or H.264 (Rec.709) are great for online use.
are you dolby vision certified
Currently not, although we are working towards this certification and equipment upgrade at present, please check back for more on this at a later time, or call to discuss. For Dolby Vision Certified projects distributed to platforms like Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+, we recommend Brisbane based colourist Kali Bateman, see: kalibatemancolourist.com
how long does colour grading take?
It depends on the project length and complexity. A short film or music video may take a few days, while a feature-length film may take several months for detailed grading.
can you work to a specific budget?
Yes! We can tailor the colour grading process to fit your budget while ensuring the best possible quality. Whether you need a high-end cinematic grade or a streamlined, efficient workflow, We’ll work with you to achieve the best results within your budget.
